"Alarm Clock" challenges all skating and puck control skills while working on the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems. Players are broken into groups of 2 or 3. The first player skates to 3 O'clock and returns, then to 12 O'clock and returns, then to 9 O'clock and returns, and finally to 6 O'clock and returns. The player must attempt to follow the plane of the circle. The next time the player goes they go the opposite direction. As a progression, have players carry a puck or incorporate pivots. After 3 repetitions most players are exhausted.
Teaching Points
Skating: Level shoulders on the cross-overs, side push when striding, attempt to stay on the circle line, come to a complete stop at the stop points without shortcuts. Puck Control: Carry the puck on the circle plane, minimal puck handling is required (push and pull puck versus over handle).
Anticipate the transition points on the ice where players change direction and adjust skating speed accordingly.
