"Earthquake 1vs1", creates gap challenges and creates a multi-faceted 1vs1 attack. On the whistle, two forwards from diagonal sides begin with a puck and accelerate around the center circle. At the same time the two defensive players begin backwards and must retreat around the end zone circle prior to closing the gap and defending 1vs1. Play the drill out for 15 seconds and on the whistle, the other diagonal sides begin. If the defensive player steals the puck they play keep-away.
Teaching Points
Attacker: Utilize speed and acceleration to set up the move. Read the defensive player's body position, stick position and speed. Attack from both sides and be unpredictable.
Defender: Backwards acceleration and pivoting skills around the circle are important. Keep stick on the ice when playing the one on one to eliminate the puck handling lane. Attempt to get up ice as far as possible prior to pivoting to backwards.
Progression: 2vs1, 2vs2.
