"Pig Pen" challenges players to execute skills in a confined space. The size of the pen can be changed by coaches and the drill can be executed as 1vs1, 2vs1, 2vs2, 3vs2,3vs3. Shift length is approximately 20 seconds. On the whistle new players enter the pen and the coach spots a new puck. Use cones to assist in defining rink size for players. Safety is of principle importance in this drill as players execute skills in the "Danger Zone". Coaches need to stress respect, body control, checking from behind and positional awareness.
Teaching Points
Offensively: Puck protection, quick release shooting without weight transfer, deceptive skills and creativity.
Defensively: Stick on puck and body on body. Stop on the puck and avoid fly-by's and swooping.
