"Spoke Skating" works on many aspects of effective skating. Players at this station put their sticks around the circle so they intersect the line. Coaches need to pay close attention to work to rest ratios to ensure maximum repetitions without having to much traffic on the route. After every few revolutions around the circle, coaches can change the skill sets. Consider the following progressions:
1. Forward to Backward Pivots
2. Stick Hoppers
3. Heal to Heal Pivots.
Stress to players the importance of not kicking the sticks out of position.
Teaching Points
Skating: The goal of this drill is skating control and coordination. Players should focus on doing it right and then increasing their speed as they progress. Adapt the skating skills to the level of your team to allow for success. Remember to keep the weight in Zones #2 and #3 in the Maloney Skate Index. Keep the shoulders level on the turns and keep feet down on the tight turns.
